Hair fall or hair loss is quite common among women, especially post pregnancy. There are many factors that contribute to the hair fall. Usually hair fall gets resolved on its own but when it becomes severe, medical attention is required.
Causes for Hair loss
There are many reasons for hair fall:
Lack of certain nutrients in one's diet, such as vitamin C, vitamin D, biotin, iron and zinc. Research shows that a lack of vitamin D in one's body can lead to hair loss. One role vitamin D plays, is stimulating new and old hair follicles. When there isn’t enough vitamin D in one's system, new hair growth can be stunted.
For vitamin D one should daily soak up some early morning sunlight.
PCOS is a common problem among women. It generally occurs because of hormonal imbalance due to excessive production of androgen which leads to thicker hair growth on face and body, and hair thinning on the head.
PCOS also causes acne, ovulation problems and weight gain.
After the age of 30, women may experience hormonal imbalance which leads to hair fall. As women reach a certain age, their body starts converting androgens into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes hair fall.
If the thyroid gland, which is present in front of the neck, starts producing excess or insufficient amount of thyroid hormones, it adversely affects the hair cycle and leads to hair loss.
With today's fast paced lifestyle, stress is a major cause of hair fall. One can minimize stress by exercising, meditating and frequent massaging of the scalp, which will help reduce hair fall.
Birth control pills also cause hair loss. The hormones in the pills which suppress ovulation, make hair grow thinner.
Sometimes hair loss also occurs when one stops taking these pills. Other drugs associated with hair loss are blood thinners, anti-depressants and medicines for heart problems and arthritis.
Hair loss may also occur due to toxic chemicals in shampoos and conditioners which have a toxic effect on the immune system, hair follicles and impede hair growth.
Also, use of high heat devices such as hair straighteners or curlers affects the keratin content which increases hair fall.
Tips for controlling Hair loss
It is very important to understand one's scalp type and chose a shampoo accordingly.
Don’t choose a shampoo which is loaded with chemicals such as sulfate, parabens, etc. which make hair strands brittle, dull and dry.
It is extremely important to have plenty of nutrients in your diet as it is needed for healthy hair growth. A balanced diet, consisting of greens, eggs, nuts, seeds and milk is essential.
Also a yoga and meditation routine are necessary for reducing stress, which leads to reducing hair fall.
Oiling the scalp with hot oil nourishes the scalp with almost incomparable effects. Massaging not only increases blood circulation but also leads to reduced hair fall.
Generally, before shampooing, massage oil into scalp for 15-20 mins and cover up with a shower cap. Wash it off with a mild shampoo after two to three hours. For best results, we recommend Eyova.
